Zurich’s Good Seed of the Day

Posted on 5 June 2023

This Volunteers’ Week is a chance to celebrate and recognise the fantastic contribution our volunteers make. We want to say a big thank you to the staff from Zurich who volunteered their time on May 4th 2023 to assist with improving the outside space at Yellow Door for service users and staff.

This included tasks such as pressure washing, gardening and clearing out the garage, as well as donating new picnic benches. They were unbe-leaf-able!

Their assistance came as part of a partnership initiative with Zurich Community Trust that will last for two years and has provided Yellow Door with grant funding of £59,414, to support our work around Domestic and Sexual Abuse within the community and beyond.

“Our charity days give us the opportunity to give something back to the communities we work in and so it’s great to hear that the spaces created will help your invaluable services.” Vikki Taylor, Sales Operations Consultant at Zurich.

With increased referrals and a rising cost-of-living crisis, their support is more crucial now than ever before. Yellow Door has seen a significant increase in demand due to an escalation of domestic and sexual abuse cases in Southampton. The area has the third highest rate of sexual offences in England and the highest rate of rape among comparator areas. Domestic abuse accounts for 35% of violence in the locality, with children usually forming part of high-risk cases.

Due to the pandemic, victims and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse have been at even greater risk with lockdowns exacerbating the situation. Faced with reduced finances, isolation, and reduced assessment of children in education, there is a greater need for help and support for those affected.

Zurich Community Trust’s support has been vital and we would like to thank them for their efforts, particularly as it coincides with Volunteers Week, a time when we wish to express our appreciation for the invaluable contribution volunteers make in their community. We encourage people to be the change they want to see and get involved in volunteering in whatever way works for them!
